POST is a series of opportune artworks created in the first 18 months of Sarah’s son’s life. Each one explores a facet of new motherhood, from feeding and sleeping, to an eventual moment of guilt-laden freedom: the nursery drop-off.
The mix of mediums reflect the ever-changing needs and limitations of a new mother. A quick photograph taken during naptime. A time-consuming pencil crayon drawing which gives the opportunity for much needed flow — but took almost 8 months to complete due to a lack of spare time. While wanting to explore the challenges of motherhood, Sarah also wants to celebrate the joy in doing something so essentially human, reflected in the use of the vivid colours which have started to slip back into her practice — an echo of her pre-motherhood work.
To sleep is a work in progress as Sarah trials new (quicker) methods of mark-making as she adapts her practice to the limitations of parenthood.
