A tale of two women, one pre-motherhood, and one postpartum.
Sarah Attwood explores the transformation of the mother through the contrast of the sculpture and photography series Her shoes with a new body of mixed media work created after the birth of her son.
The work she created pre-motherhood explores societal expectations pressed upon women, from having children and having a perfect home, to presenting in a certain way. Vivid colours and synthetic materials are used to reflect the resulting fake-ness of these societal expectations, but also celebrate the visual and tactile joy they can bring — and how do we sit with this, especially from a feminist perspective? The body, her own body, is very much present, wearing the series of shoe sculptures for Her shoes in a series of accompanying self-portraits.
In contrast, post-motherhood, the body itself has taken a step back from being physically present but is very much still a focus. Her new work moves on to what the body, a child-bearing-caring body is capable of, from feeding to rocking.
